Since waving goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw and her stylish pals, we’ve been waiting for another fashion set to come and show us the way. Look no further than hit HBO show GIRLS for a heavy helping of fashion inspiration.
Offering up New York street style for different tastes, GIRLS takes inspiration from the people of the city. The costume designer is rumoured to shop in Brooklyn flee markets and the aim is to always create a look that is realistic as well as on-trend.
Take inspiration from Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna and Jessa for a youthful look that doesn’t blow the bank.
The Hannah Look
Lena Dunham’s character Hannah is certainly not afraid to flash a little flesh. Proud of her fuller figure, Hannah flaunts it in A-line skirts and shift dresses that elongate the legs.
Get Hannah’s HBO GIRLS look by opting for A-line skirts with a high waist. These cinch in the waist and emphasise an hourglass, womanly shape. Dare to be bold and opt for brighter colours. Team you skirt with a smart button down shirt and go geek chic with a coloured tight and a pair of Mary Janes.
The Marnie Look
Marnie presents perhaps the easiest style to emulate. Opting for girly dresses that fit tight to her trim frame and offsetting them with chic accessories, Marnie’s look is feminine but also sexy.
Get Marnie’s look by opting for a pretty floral dress in a bold colour. Bare the legs and don’t be afraid to pick a well-fitted option. Alternatively, try jeans with a platform shoe and a loose-fitting blouse for her off-duty, singer-songwriter look.
The Shoshanna Look
You don’t need to break the bank to achieve Shoshanna’s preppy look. Very much the Upper East Side girl, Shoshanna, played by Zosia Mamet, adopts a prim and tidy approach to dressing. Everything matches and it is always accessorised.
Get Shoshanna’s look by opting for a colourful skirt and pairing with a simple t-shirt or top. Dress the look up with a matching heel or a waist cinching belt and matching bag. Don’t forget hair accessories. Our hot-tip is a dainty Alice band.
The Jessa Look
The wild-child of the group of girls, Jessa is all about the Bohemian look. Mixing boho with expressionistic, arty pieces, Jessa arguably takes the most risks of the group – be it a fur gilet jacket or a colourful kimono.
Get the look with a pair of loose fitting tapered trousers, a loose vest and a pair of wedge heels. Accessorise with a kimono or a statement jacket and layer over lashings of ethnic beads and add a bracelet.
Hair and make-up can be as low-key as you like when channelling the Jessa look. Tie it in a top-knot or let it loose. The trick is to wear this look with confidence.
