With winter well and truly on its way out (finally!), we’re looking ahead to the new season. Aside from the key pieces we’ll all be wearing this year, 2019 has already ushered in some denim trends that we just can’t get enough of. After all, jeans are the cornerstones of wardrobes everywhere. And when it comes to denim staples like jackets and skirts, there’s always more than meets the eye. So, from key cuts to doubling up, here are some of spring’s biggest denim trends and how to wear them.
Boiler Suits
Coveralls, jumpsuits, boiler suits: whatever you call them, they’re going to be everywhere come summer. Utility fashion has gone high-end thanks to designers like Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant, whose spring/summer 2019 shows championed the boiler suit. Whether you go for a classic slouchy boiler suit with a zip or popper closure or choose a collared, button-front piece that’s got a touch of 70s bohemia about it, you’ll almost certainly be sporting one of these pleasantly practical, fashion-forward all-in-ones by the end of spring.
Whilst the weather’s still a bit temperamental, pair your boiler suit with heeled ankle boots or, if you want to keep it a little more laid back, wear it with your favourite trainers. Once summer arrives, there’s no need to relegate your denim onesie to the back of the wardrobe; keep cool by wearing it with a tank top, and belt the arms around your waist. Or, simply throw on your comfiest sandals and a pair of shades before heading out the door.
Straight Cut Jeans
Whilst classic cuts – whether skinny or flared – will always have their place, there’s usually a particular jean style that comes to dominate each year. And in 2019, it’s all about straight cut denim. These vintage-style staples have become a firm favourite amongst the fashion set; every influencer worth their salt has been spotted in a pair.
High or mid-rise styles are perfect for wearing with a simple white t-shirt or crisp blouse; complete your look with a dash of red lippy for a polished yet low-key finish, and swap out your ankle boots for a pair of chunky sandals come summer.
Tailored Denim Jackets
This season’s denim jackets are a little more tailored than their predecessors; think cinched-in waists, lapel collars and streamlined silhouettes. Yes, it’s finally time to pack away your boxy, oversized denim jacket in favour of something a little sleeker. We’ll be taking inspiration from our favourite looks at London Fashion Week and doubling up on our denim. Fitted jackets were belted and paired with coordinating kick-flares or straight-leg jeans for a modern, more relaxed take on tailoring.
Embroidered Everything
Putting a pretty spin on denim classics, embroidered details will give even the simplest skinnies an update this spring. Floral embroidery will be especially prominent, which is fitting for a season in full bloom. You’ll see fewer distressed styles this year and more of this subtler detail.
We love the contrast too; when something delicate like embroidery is set against the durability of denim, it keeps your look feeling special, but adds a tomboy toughness at the same time. And this mix of masculine and feminine is super easy to wear – especially when paired with your favourite chunky sandals and a no-nonsense tee.
An embroidered denim shirt has a timeless appeal, and if you want to embrace the trend without going all-out (hey, handicrafts aren’t for everyone!), then this is your best bet. Wear yours with a pair of jeans and a stiletto court heel for a modern take; it shouldn’t work, but it really, really does. Trust us.
Hem Details
If all-over detail doesn’t do it for you, then you’re in luck; simply sticking to fancy hems is enough to give your jeans a new-season spin. From sequins to frills, it’s all about day to night denim this season. We love how playful this trend is; by taking your basic ankle-grazers and adding a little something extra at the hem, it immediately takes the look from same old to statement-making.
Keep the focus on your denim by pairing your jeans with a crisp blouse and neutral heels. Come summer, this trend is especially easy to bring into your casual wardrobe; worn with simple sandals and a basic vest top, it’s the sort of outfit that long, lazy lunches were made for.
