You might have noticed that your little girl or boy has shot up recently; in fact, the summer growth spurt is no myth. Children are known to grow faster during the spring and summer months than they are over autumn and winter, which is why you’re probably finding that they’re in need of a new seasonal wardrobe. Setting aside the big bucks for something that’ll last a year though? We’re not OK with that. Update their summer essentials for less with our must-have kids’ clothes and accessories.
Summery Sandals
Sandals are a summer essential for big and little feet alike. Whilst that pair of sandals you bought in the sale last year are almost certainly going to see you through this season, your child’s shoes aren’t going to have the same staying power. Kids’ shoes are unlikely to last a year, and the younger they are, the more they’ll need replacing:
- Babies and toddlers aged 1-3 years are likely to need their shoes replacing every 3 ½ to 4 months; their feet tend to grow ½ a size up to a whole size in this short space of time!
- Children aged between 4-6 years will need their shoes replacing every 4 ½ – 5 months, since their feet are likely to grow a ½ to 1 full size every 4-5 months.
- Children aged 7-10 should get their shoes replaced approximately every 5 months (or at least twice a year). Their feet will grow between ½ a size and 1 whole size during this time.
Look for a style that’s going to last them the summer; a versatile, wear-with-anything design is your best bet. Choose a classic tan or black pair for ease, and look for more solid designs that are suitable for daily use, rather than going for a flip flop that won’t offer enough support.
Stylish Shorts
When it comes to seasonal kids’ clothing, it’s better to have a good selection of interchangeable basics to build up a wardrobe of everyday casual outfits – especially if they’re not at school yet. After the age of 1, children tend to grow about 2 ½ inches per year, so it’s important to update their seasonal staples in conjunction with this. Pick out some easy-to-wear shorts that are going to match with more than one or two t-shirts. They also need to be a) comfortable and b) easy to launder (you can thank us later!).
Lightweight Mac
Whilst it’s easy to forget in the midst of a heatwave, the U.K is prone to summertime showers, so getting your little one a waterproof mac that’s lightweight enough to wear over summer is always a good idea. The fact that rain coats tend to be lighter means you can roll them up and carry them easily. After all, there’s nothing worse than being caught short in the rain when you’re out on a family day trip.
Daily Denim
Just like the adults, kids need a solid denim collection. Not only is it one of the most durable fabrics, it’s a stylishly contemporary option for little trendsetters. Everyday jeans are a must whatever time of year it is, though summer calls for something a little more breezy; invest in a pair of kids’ jean shorts that can be worn with an array of their favourite tops or tees. Longer-length designs are perfect for play time, and can be dressed up with smart-casual separates for family BBQ season. Girly girls will love a denim dress; they have great layering potential too, meaning those tricky trans-seasonal months are covered.
Swimming Essentials
Nothing says ‘summer’ quite like a dip in the pool or a day spent at the beach. Whether you’re off on holiday or heading to the nearest lido at home, getting your little one ready to hit the water with well-fitting swimwear is a must. Look out for rash tops, sunsuits and kids’ swimming costumes that are designed with UV protection, and always remember to pile on the sunscreen when they’re out and about. Make pool time more fun with a selection of brightly-coloured inflatables. Pool rings, floats and beach balls are all ways to keep them entertained on family holidays – just remember to be sensible with how many are being used at one time. For safety, it’s important that your view of the pool floor isn’t obstructed.
